The way food is produced and consumed today leads to significant food loss and waste, which is responsible for an estimated 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions and contributes to up to 14% of global methane emissions. This waste also drives the unnecessary use of land, water, and energy, contributing to biodiversity loss and the degradation of natural ecosystems. All of this occurs while around 733 million people globally suffer from hunger. Yet, there is enormous potential to reduce emissions from the food system while delivering broad benefits across the sustainable development agenda.
